Be retrievable before you try to be persuasive

Generative engines pull from live indexes and crawls. If your page is JavaScript-dependent, blocked to AI user agents, or buried four clicks deep, no amount of writing quality helps. Serve meaningful HTML on first response, allow the assistant crawlers you want traffic from, and keep important pages within two clicks of the homepage.

Write in self-contained chunks

Retrieval operates on passages, not documents. Each section should carry its own subject, its own definition of terms, and its own evidence. A chunk that depends on a paragraph 900 words earlier loses meaning the moment it is pulled out of context - and a chunk that loses meaning gets dropped from synthesis.

Give the model something only you have

Synthesis rewards novelty. Original benchmarks, first-party data, dated test results, and named case specifics survive summarization because they cannot be reconstructed from the other sources in the context window. Generic advice gets merged into the consensus paragraph with no citation.

Build corroboration off-site

Models weight claims that appear consistently across independent sources. Being described the same way on your site, on directory profiles, in reviews, and in third-party articles raises the confidence attached to statements about you - which is what a citation ultimately expresses.

Publish machine-readable context

Organization and Product schema, an llms.txt file, a clean sitemap, and stable canonical URLs make it cheap for a crawler to understand what you are. Cheap-to-parse sources get sampled more often.

Track citations, not positions

The GEO scoreboard is share of voice inside AI answers: how often your brand or domain is named for a defined prompt set, in what position, and with what sentiment. Run the same prompt set weekly so movement means something.

Retrievability is the constraint most teams never test

Generative engines fetch pages under tight time budgets and with limited or no JavaScript execution. A page that looks complete in a browser can arrive at the retrieval layer as a navigation bar and an empty main element. Before touching content, fetch your own key pages with a plain HTTP client, disable scripts, and read what comes back. If the main text is missing, nothing else in a GEO programme matters yet.

The second common blocker is access. Bot-protection services, aggressive rate limiting, and inherited robots.txt rules routinely exclude assistant crawlers by default, and the failure is silent - there is no report telling you that you were never fetched. Enumerate the user agents you want to serve, verify each against your access logs, and confirm at least one successful fetch per week for your priority URLs.

Only after access and rendering are proven does content structure become the bottleneck. Teams that skip this order spend months rewriting copy that no engine ever downloaded.

Writing chunks that survive synthesis

Synthesis is a compression step. The model has several sources describing the same thing and must produce one paragraph. Anything present in multiple sources becomes background knowledge and needs no citation; anything present in exactly one source either gets dropped or gets cited. Citation is therefore a reward for being the only place a specific fact exists.

That reframes the content brief. Instead of asking 'what should this page cover', ask 'what will this page contain that no other page in the retrieval set contains'. Acceptable answers include a measurement you ran, a price you published, a date you can prove, a failure case you documented, or a comparison nobody else has made. Unacceptable answers include a better explanation of something already well explained.

Structurally, keep each of these unique facts inside its own labelled chunk of eighty to two hundred words. Burying an original benchmark in the middle of a two-thousand-word narrative means the retrieval step may never surface the passage that contained your only citable asset.
