Step 1: let the right bots in
OpenAI uses distinct user agents: GPTBot for training-scale crawling, OAI-SearchBot for search indexing, and ChatGPT-User for live user-triggered fetches. Blocking OAI-SearchBot removes you from ChatGPT search results entirely, even if GPTBot is allowed.
Step 2: be retrievable for the prompt, not the keyword
People type sentences into ChatGPT, not keywords. Add headings that mirror full natural-language prompts, including comparisons ('X vs Y for small teams') and constraints ('cheapest option under $50').
Step 3: be the clearest source of a fact
Models prefer passages with a specific number, a date, and an unambiguous subject. 'Pricing starts at $29 per month as of August 2026' is quotable. 'Affordable pricing for every budget' is not.
Step 4: strengthen entity signals
Organization schema, a real about page with named authors, consistent NAP details, and third-party mentions all help the model connect your brand to your topic with confidence.
Step 5: measure citations on a fixed prompt set
Choose 20-40 prompts your buyers would actually type, run them monthly, and record which domains get cited. Track your share of those citations - that number, not a rank, is your ChatGPT visibility.
